New Delhi: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of continuing to display an “Emergency mindset” and alleging that it has failed to respect parliamentary traditions and constitutional norms.
Referring to the Emergency imposed in 1975, Dubey said the Congress had exercised strict control over the media, deciding what editorials could be published and even banning the songs of legendary singer Kishore Kumar. He claimed the same attitude was evident in the party’s conduct in Parliament.
Dubey said members of Parliament are expected to speak in accordance with the Constitution and parliamentary rules, emphasizing that the dignity of the House must always be maintained. He alleged that senior Congress leaders had failed to uphold those standards.
Targeting Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Dubey claimed that remarks made by Priyanka Gandhi inside the Lok Sabha had been expunged by the Speaker, while Rahul Gandhi’s conduct outside the House reflected a lack of respect for parliamentary decorum and seniority.
Recalling an earlier incident during the UPA government, Dubey referred to Rahul Gandhi tearing up an ordinance in the presence of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying the episode demonstrated a lack of respect for the office of the Prime Minister despite Gandhi being an ordinary MP at the time.
The BJP MP also said the Gandhi family needed guidance to better understand India’s civilisation and culture. He further claimed that the Congress was witnessing a steady decline due to what he described as its failure to respect senior leaders and democratic traditions.
“The Congress is fading away and nearing its end. A time will come when people will simply say there used to be a party called the Congress. It will become nothing more than a chapter in history,” Dubey said.
