Nepal to Retain Controversial Map on New One-Rupee Coin

Kathmandu: Nepal has decided to retain the controversial national map depicting Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani on its newly designed one-rupee coin, the country’s central bank announced on Saturday.

The three territories remain at the centre of a border dispute between India and Nepal. Kathmandu claims the areas as part of its territory, while India maintains they belong to Uttarakhand and has consistently stated that the issue should be resolved through bilateral dialogue.

The disputed regions were incorporated into Nepal’s official political map in May 2020 during the tenure of then Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. The latest decision to feature the map on the new coin is expected to keep the long-standing boundary issue in focus.
