New Delhi: Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, has appealed to the public not to criticise her husband for ending his 26-day hunger strike, saying he had made immense personal sacrifices for a cause larger than himself and deserves compassion rather than judgment.
Her appeal came shortly after Wangchuk called off his fast late on Thursday following assurances from the government on his key demands. Leaders from across party lines had also repeatedly urged him to end the hunger strike and continue contributing to the nation.
In an emotional post on social media platform X, Angmo revealed that Wangchuk is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after losing 11 kilograms, including significant muscle mass, during the prolonged fast.
She said the physical toll of the hunger strike had been severe and urged people to understand the sacrifices behind his decision rather than rush to judge him.
Wangchuk’s fast had drawn widespread attention across the country, with supporters viewing it as part of his continued campaign on issues concerning Ladakh and environmental protection. The government’s assurances ultimately paved the way for the activist to end his protest.
