Caracas: A powerful earthquake has reportedly caused widespread destruction in Venezuela, with significant damage reported in the capital, Caracas, and the port city of La Guaira.
According to initial reports, more than 1,000 people are feared to have lost their lives in the disaster. Following the earthquake, acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a nationwide state of emergency.
The earthquake’s epicentre was located at a depth of 13.1 kilometres in Yaracuy state. Authorities said two consecutive earthquakes struck the region, contributing to the extensive damage.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the United States and El Salvador expressed their support for Venezuela.
Meanwhile, tsunami warnings have been issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as a precaution.
