Evian, France: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on Tuesday, reviewing the progress in India-Canada relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation.
The two leaders welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction over the developments achieved since Prime Minister Carney’s visit to India in March 2026.
Reaffirming their commitment to a forward-looking strategic partnership, the leaders highlighted the complementary strengths of the Indian and Canadian economies. They also stressed the importance of resilient and reliable supply chains in ensuring global energy and food security.
During the meeting, the Prime Ministers reviewed progress in economic cooperation, including commercial arrangements related to liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and metallurgical coal.
Both leaders welcomed the increasing exchange of high-level visits between the two countries. They noted the recent visit of Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Canada and looked forward to a Canadian trade mission to India later this year, led by Canada’s Minister of International Trade.
The two sides also expressed satisfaction with the ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the agreement in 2026.
The leaders welcomed stronger institutional engagement between the two governments, including recent meetings of the Joint Science and Technology Committee and the Consular Dialogue. They also looked forward to future discussions in the areas of defence, finance, and migration.
In a significant step towards enhancing defence and security cooperation, India and Canada agreed to begin negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). The leaders also welcomed recent exchanges between defence institutions, including the visit of India’s National Defence College to Canada.
The meeting also reviewed collaboration under the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy, which focuses on skill development, innovation partnerships, and educational cooperation between institutions in both countries.
Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s support for Canada becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The leaders also announced the establishment of “Raisina Americas,” a new platform aimed at strengthening dialogue, exchanges, and cooperation between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Carney for inviting him to visit Canada in 2026. Both sides agreed to continue diplomatic consultations to finalise mutually convenient dates for the visit.
