Shigella infections are spreading in Kerala, raising concerns among health authorities. In recent days, nine children in Wayanad district have been diagnosed with the disease, while one more case was confirmed on Thursday. Health officials have intensified preventive measures in the district.
According to reports, 502 students of Kolayadi School in Wayanad are showing symptoms associated with the infection. A total of 47 people are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals. To curb the spread of the disease, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in three panchayats and the Sulthan Bathery Municipality area. The Health Department has also advised children to avoid public outings and participation in gatherings.
Meanwhile, data on Shigella infections over the past five years has been released. So far in 2026, 114 cases have been confirmed across the state. The increase in infections compared to previous years has become a matter of concern. The Health Department has indicated that the disease has been reported in several districts, prompting heightened surveillance and preventive action.
