New Delhi: Lao PDR Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavan Phomvihane called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday during his first official visit to India.

Welcoming the Lao leader, President Murmu highlighted the close civilisational ties between India and Lao PDR, rooted in Buddhism and the Ramayana, and noted that the two countries are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations this year.

The President recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lao PDR in October 2024 for ASEAN-related summits, during which several agreements were signed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Murmu said there is significant potential to expand trade and investment between the two nations and expressed India’s willingness to enhance cooperation in sectors including ICT, healthcare, agriculture, irrigation, manufacturing, renewable energy, and electricity.

Both leaders welcomed the growing development partnership and agreed that closer cooperation would bring mutual benefits to the people of both countries.
