Vice President Calls for Responsible Journalism at Deepika’s 140th Anniversary Celebrations

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday underscored the importance of responsible and constructive journalism while addressing the 140th Foundation Day celebrations of Deepika Malayalam Daily in Kottayam.

Speaking at the event, the Vice President described Deepika’s 140-year journey as a remarkable legacy of commitment, courage, credibility and public service. He said the true dharma of journalism lies in appreciating good work while fearlessly criticising wrongdoing whenever necessary.

Highlighting the role of the media in a democracy, Radhakrishnan said newspapers have a responsibility beyond reporting events and should also showcase stories of hope, innovation, compassion and scientific progress. Such constructive journalism, he said, inspires society and strengthens nation-building.

The Vice President stressed that editorials are the appropriate space for opinion, while news reporting must remain objective and factual. He cautioned against the growing tendency to mix opinion with news reporting.

Expressing concern over misinformation, declining public trust and the rapid transformation of the media landscape through digital platforms, he said people are increasingly influenced by headlines and captions without engaging deeply with issues.

Radhakrishnan also praised Deepika for its longstanding contribution to social harmony, education, culture and public discourse in Kerala. He expressed confidence that the newspaper would continue to uphold high standards of integrity and professionalism while inspiring future generations of journalists.

The Vice President also presented the Deepika Excellence Awards during the function. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, former West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and several other dignitaries attended the event.
