Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari has sparked controversy with remarks suggesting that girls should remain at home and do not need education.
During a public event, Tiwari reportedly said girls look better staying at home and that it is not appropriate for them to be out on the streets.
Questioning the need for education for girls, the minister said daughters are the “strength and prosperity” of families. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed that women do not need to come out onto the streets when efforts for women’s empowerment are being undertaken.
The remarks have triggered criticism on social media and among opposition leaders, with many accusing the minister of promoting regressive views against women’s education and freedom.
