Centre Urges States to Strengthen Fire Safety in Healthcare Facilities

The Union government has directed states and Union Territories to step up fire prevention and safety measures across healthcare facilities ahead of Fire Safety Week to be observed from May 4 to 10.

In a communication issued on April 17, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare highlighted that fire incidents pose a serious threat to life and infrastructure in hospitals and other healthcare settings.

The ministry noted that such risks are particularly critical in facilities where vulnerable patients depend on uninterrupted medical care, including intensive care units and emergency services.

States have been asked to ensure preparedness, strict compliance with fire safety norms, and regular inspection of healthcare institutions as part of the nationwide focus during Fire Safety Week.

Officials said the move aims to enhance safety standards and prevent potential disasters in hospitals and similar establishments.
