Dowry Deaths a ‘Severe Blot’ on Society, Says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has described dowry deaths as a “severe blot” on society, highlighting that the practice continues to cause the unnatural deaths of thousands of women despite legal bans.

A bench of JB Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi made the observation while cancelling the bail granted to a man accused in a dowry death case.

The court said the order of the Patna High Court granting bail was “wholly unsustainable,” and stressed that courts must exercise greater caution when dealing with serious offences like dowry deaths.

Emphasising the seriousness of such crimes, the apex court noted that judicial discretion should be applied carefully, particularly in cases involving violence against women leading to unnatural deaths.
