The company has been fined ₹1.40 lakh after its cow ghee failed rigorous quality tests conducted at both state and national laboratories. The action was initiated after samples collected back in 2020 were found to be substandard and not meeting food-safety norms.
The ghee sample first failed testing at a state laboratory in Rudrapur. A subsequent examination at the National Referral Laboratory in Ghaziabad confirmed the earlier findings, ruling that the product did not comply with standards under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Following the lab reports, the court imposed penalties on all parties involved in distributing the substandard batch —
- ₹1,00,000 fine on Patanjali Ayurved
- ₹25,000 fine on the distributor
- ₹15,000 fine on the retailer
Food safety officials warned that consuming such low-quality ghee could pose health risks, highlighting the need for strict adherence to quality-control norms in edible products.
The incident raises concerns over the quality assurance processes of one of India’s most prominent Ayurvedic brands, which has previously been under scrutiny for similar issues.
