Thiruvananthapuram: The legal battle surrounding MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, accused in a rape case, is set to escalate as the Thiruvananthapuram Sessions Court will hear his anticipatory bail plea on Wednesday. The petition, filed on Monday, has created suspense over whether investigators will proceed with his arrest before the court reaches a decision.
In his plea, Rahul admits to a long-standing friendship and a consensual sexual relationship with the complainant but firmly denies allegations of rape or coercion, including claims that he forced her to undergo an abortion. He alleges that the woman deliberately recorded their private phone conversations in an attempt to frame him.
The petition further states that the complainant had leaked their WhatsApp chats and recorded conversations even when the two shared a cordial relationship. Rahul also notes that he was aware she was married and befriended her out of sympathy after learning about the difficulties in her marital life.
Meanwhile, the police are stepping up their efforts to counter Rahul’s bail request, gathering additional evidence to strengthen the prosecution’s case. Investigators are verifying medical documents and audio recordings submitted by the complainant and inspecting the flats where the alleged incidents occurred.
Authorities are also taking statements from key individuals, including the doctor who treated the woman after she reportedly suffered complications from abortion pills. These pills—known for their severe side effects and recommended only under medical supervision—were allegedly supplied to her by Rahul’s friend Joby Joseph, who has now been added as a co-accused in the case.
