Vizhinjam International Seaport Set for Major Expansion: Phase II Works to Be Launched on January 24

Thiruvananthapuram: Vizhinjam International Seaport is poised for a significant leap forward as the construction inauguration of its second phase of development will take place on January 24 at 4 pm. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the works, while Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan will preside over the function.

The event will also mark the launch of EXIM cargo services, enabling full-fledged import and export operations from the port. Additionally, a newly built port road connecting Vizhinjam Seaport to the National Highway bypass will be formally opened, strengthening multimodal connectivity.

The second phase is part of a massive development project with an investment of around ₹10,000 crore. On completion, the port’s annual container handling capacity will rise dramatically from 1.5 million TEUs to 5 million TEUs, positioning Vizhinjam as a major transshipment hub in the region.

Key infrastructure upgrades include the expansion of berth length from 800 metres to 2,000 metres and the extension of the breakwater from 3 km to 4 km. The phase also encompasses the development of a railway yard, a multi-purpose berth, a liquid terminal, and a tank farm, further enhancing the port’s operational capabilities and global competitiveness.
