Vijay to Meet Families of Karur Stampede Victims Today at Mahabalipuram Resort; CBI Takes Over Probe

Chennai: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay is set to meet the families of the 41 people who lost their lives in the tragic Karur stampede on Monday. The closed-door meeting will be held at a private resort in Mahabalipuram, with media access strictly restricted.

According to party sources, elaborate arrangements have been made for the event, including 50 rooms booked to host the bereaved families. The attendees were brought from their homes to Karur by car and then transported in eight buses to Mahabalipuram. TVK officials said 38 families have arrived, while a few could not attend due to traditional and religious observances.

Although Vijay had initially planned to visit Karur in person, the plan was later shifted to Mahabalipuram citing security reasons. However, reports indicate that some families expressed disappointment over the change in venue.

The event, organized by the consultancy firm Voice of Commons, will begin around 10 a.m. with Vijay lighting candles before photographs of the 41 victims as a tribute. Vijay will then meet each family privately in their designated rooms before concluding the session by 3 p.m. following lunch.

Earlier, Vijay had donated ₹20 lakh each to the families of the deceased, directly transferring the aid to their bank accounts.

Meanwhile, in a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken over the Karur stampede probe. The agency has registered a fresh FIR, replacing the one filed by the state police, and has begun recording statements from victims’ families after visiting the tragedy site.

The high-profile meeting comes at a sensitive moment for Vijay and his political outfit, as both the humanitarian outreach and the ongoing investigation draw statewide attention.
