US–China Trade Thaw: Trump Delays 145% Tariff by Three Months, Beijing Responds in Kind

Washington: In a significant step towards easing trade tensions, US President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day delay in imposing a planned 145% additional tariff on Chinese goods. The move, signed into order by Trump, pushes the tariff implementation deadline to November 10 and raises hopes for a fresh trade agreement between the two nations.

The decision came just hours before the current US–China trade deal was set to expire. “All other aspects of the agreement will remain the same,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Beijing responded swiftly, with China’s Ministry of Commerce confirming a three-month suspension of additional tariffs on American goods.

The tariff truce follows a year of heightened tensions, with both countries earlier increasing duties on each other’s products. In May, they agreed to temporarily scale back the measures. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed optimism that the US would work with China to uphold recent high-level understandings, stressing the need for equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit in future trade relations.
