Trump Targets BRICS With Tariff Threats: Global Trade Tensions Escalate Ahead of Key Deadline

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited global trade tensions by labeling BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—as “anti-American” and threatening an additional 10% tariff on any country that aligns with their policies. His sharp remarks, delivered via social media during the BRICS summit in Rio, come just as a 90-day U.S. tariff pause nears its July 9 expiration.

“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an additional 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions,” Trump stated firmly.

The U.S. is now preparing to dispatch tariff letters to dozens of countries, potentially enacting the new levies as early as August 1. Although some nations like the UK and Vietnam have negotiated exemptions, many others face tariff hikes ranging from 10% to 49%, particularly if they are seen as favoring BRICS initiatives.

Global markets responded with caution—stock futures dipped, while the U.S. dollar gained strength. BRICS leaders voiced concern over Washington’s unilateral protectionist moves, warning of deeper fractures in international trade.

With the deadline looming, global trade ministers are scrambling to secure deals or prepare for steep penalties, as Trump’s aggressive economic stance signals a return to his signature “America First” trade strategy.
