Actor-turned-politician cites dissatisfaction with local party leadership in Jadavpur constituency.
Jadavpur- In a surprising turn of events, Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty has tendered her resignation, expressing discontent with the local leadership within her constituency. The actor, who emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Jadavpur seat, submitted her resignation to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
While the resignation is yet to reach the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mimi Chakraborty clarified that her decision stems from her dissatisfaction with the local party leadership and the challenges she faced in pursuing her vision for Jadavpur. Speaking about her dual roles as a politician and actor, she stated, “Politics is not for me. You have to promote someone here (in politics) if you are helping someone. Besides being a politician, I also work as an actor. I have equal responsibilities. If you join politics, you are criticised whether you work or not,” as reported by ANI.
Mimi Chakraborty revealed that she had discussed her concerns with Mamata Banerjee, stating, “I wanted to tell her about my resignation from a party that gave me an opportunity to go ahead. I had also told her in 2022 about my resignation from the post of an MP. She had rejected it at that time. I will complete the further process after whatever she says.”
In the 2019 general elections, Mimi Chakraborty secured victory in Jadavpur, defeating BJP’s Anupam Hazra and CPM’s Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. However, her journey in politics seems to have faced obstacles, with the actor-politician expressing difficulty in navigating the intricacies of the political landscape. “It is very easy to malign a person when he or she comes from a film background, saying that he or she does not work. I don’t understand the nitty-gritty of politics. When I reached out to people, I think it might not have gone down well with a lot of people or maybe some of them,” she added, according to NDTV.
As the news of Mimi Chakraborty’s resignation reverberates, the political landscape in Jadavpur awaits further developments and the official submission of her resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker.
