Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall, and Sea Erosion Threat: IMD Issues Weather Alert for Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Kerala, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds, and the possibility of heavy rainfall today, Saturday, April 12, 2025. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30–40 km/h, with isolated regions likely to receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours.

A yellow alert has been declared in five districts: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur. Residents are urged to remain cautious and follow real-time weather updates from trusted sources.

The IMD has also raised concerns about sea erosion along Kerala’s coastlines due to worsening sea conditions. Coastal communities and fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea, anchor boats securely, and stay off beaches until further notice.

Further, thunderstorms with lightning are expected to persist in isolated parts of the state from April 13 to 15.

IMD Safety Guidelines:

  • Take shelter indoors at the first sign of lightning or thunder.
  • Avoid open spaces and tall structures during storms.
  • Unplug electrical appliances to prevent surge damage.
  • Stay away from windows and doors during strong winds.

Authorities urge the public to stay alert, follow safety instructions, and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
