Chennai: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has been denied police permission to visit Karur, where a tragic stampede claimed several lives. His request to pay a visit was turned down after authorities cited security risks and fears of law-and-order unrest if he appeared at the site.
Adding to the storm, an intelligence report has exposed glaring lapses by the police. While permission had been granted for a gathering of 10,000 people, massive crowds began assembling as early as 10 a.m., far beyond the venue’s safe capacity. The Veluchamipuram ground, with room for fewer than 50,000 people, was grossly overcrowded, and emergency measures were reportedly absent—leading to the deadly chaos.
Meanwhile, posters branding Vijay a “murderer” have surfaced in Karur. Allegedly issued by a student group, the posters accuse him of being responsible for the deaths of innocent people and demand his immediate arrest.
The controversy deepened further when Vijay’s Chennai residence in Neelankarai received a bomb threat. Police rushed to the spot with a bomb squad and conducted intensive searches inside and outside the actor’s home. Thankfully, nothing suspicious was found.
The stampede fallout has not only shaken Karur but also thrown Vijay into the center of a political and public storm, raising questions about safety lapses, accountability, and the future of his political journey.
