TBMs for India’s First Undersea Bullet Train Tunnel Arrive in Mumbai

The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) required for constructing India’s first undersea rail tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project are set to arrive at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust on Monday, sources said.

The specially customised TBMs have been manufactured by Herrenknecht at its facility in China. These machines are designed to meet the specific requirements of the ambitious infrastructure project.

Officials noted that the TBMs are among the largest and most expensive ever used in India, with a diameter of 13.1 metres. They are also among the biggest machines to be deployed in any railway project in the country.

The arrival of these TBMs marks a significant step forward in the construction of the undersea tunnel, a key component of the high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
