Southern Railway Makes Landmark Move to Fully Fund 55 Overbridges in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: In a bold and unprecedented step, Southern Railway has taken full financial responsibility for the construction of 55 road overbridges (ROBs) across Kerala, following the state government’s inability to contribute its usual 50% share due to financial constraints.

Breaking away from the traditional 50:50 cost-sharing model with state governments, Southern Railway’s decision highlights its commitment to public safety and infrastructure development. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns over delays at busy level crossings and the urgent need to enhance traffic and rail safety.

The Kerala Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) will carry out the construction. So far, 18 projects have received approval, with Southern Railway allocating ₹95 crore for land acquisition. These are expected to be completed within 18 months. The remaining 37 projects are currently held up due to delays in state-level planning approvals and land acquisition.

This extraordinary move is expected to accelerate the elimination of level crossings, boosting transport safety and easing congestion in key areas across the state.
