Shock Resignation: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Steps Down Citing Health Concerns

New Delhi: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has tendered his resignation, sending ripples through the political landscape. Citing health-related concerns, Dhankhar submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, just hours after presiding over proceedings in the Rajya Sabha and administering oaths to newly elected members—making the announcement all the more surprising.

“I step down with pride,” Jagdeep Dhankhar wrote in the letter, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution. Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and Members of Parliament for their support during his tenure. He also conveyed deep appreciation for being able to contribute to the nation’s development during his time in office.

Dhankhar’s resignation comes with nearly two years left in his term, which began on August 6, 2022, when he assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India. Before this role, he served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022, where he was known for his assertive and sometimes controversial stance. His sudden departure marks a major shift at the top echelons of India’s political hierarchy, and responses from across the political spectrum are expected in the coming hours.
