Thiruvananthapuram: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) unit committee at University College, Thiruvananthapuram, has been dissolved. The decision was taken by the SFI district committee following a series of allegations, including frequent clashes and financial irregularities.
The move was decided at an emergency meeting convened by the district committee. Along with dissolving the unit committee, the district leadership has also decided to conduct an inquiry into the financial allegations linked to the college unit.
In the wake of the dissolution, an ad hoc committee has been formed to coordinate organisational activities at the college. A member of the SFI state committee has been included in the ad hoc body.
University College has repeatedly come under criticism due to recurring incidents of violence and internal conflicts. According to the district leadership, these controversies have damaged the organisation’s image, prompting a strict restructuring in line with party directives.
Several incidents reportedly contributed to the decision, including clashes between rival groups of SFI leaders over illegal stay in the hostel. There were also allegations that unit office-bearers assaulted a district leader who had arrived on campus to mediate and resolve the issue.
Earlier, four SFI leaders were suspended in connection with the assault of a differently-abled student on the campus. Although cases were registered against them and they later secured anticipatory bail, the reception accorded to them on their return to the campus had further embarrassed the organisation and placed the leadership under pressure.
