‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse to Dazzle Antarctica Next Week

Skywatchers are counting down to a spectacular celestial event as a rare annular solar eclipse is set to transform the Sun into a blazing “ring of fire” on February 17, 2026. The phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun but is too far from Earth to completely block the Sun’s light. As a result, a brilliant ring of sunlight will glow around the Moon’s dark silhouette, creating one of the most dramatic sights in astronomy.

This time, the full annular eclipse will be visible mainly over remote parts of Antarctica, offering a breathtaking view for scientists and research teams stationed there. Partial phases of the eclipse may be seen in select regions of the Southern Hemisphere, while much of the world will miss the event. Experts strongly advise using certified solar viewing glasses or indirect methods to observe the eclipse safely, as looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent eye damage.
