Relief in Kerala as Two Children Beat Rare Amebic Brain Fever

Kozhikode: Kerala heaved a sigh of relief after two young brothers who were battling the rare and deadly amebic meningoencephalitis—commonly known as amebic brain fever—made a full recovery and were discharged from Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

The recovered children, Aarav (7) and Abhijay (12), had been under intensive care after contracting the infection that earlier claimed the life of their sister. Their successful recovery has brought hope amid widespread concern over the disease.

A dedicated medical team led by Pediatric Department Head Dr. Mohandas Nair, along with Dr. A. M. Shameem, Dr. Figi, and junior residents Dr. H. Siddalingesh and Dr. Anjali Varghese, coordinated the treatment that ensured their recovery.

Meanwhile, two more children—a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl—remain under treatment at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health. Their condition is reported to be stable, Principal Dr. K. G. Sajith Kumar confirmed.

Acting on the directions of Health Minister Veena George, doctors are administering a special five-drug regimen, including rare and costly medicines sourced from abroad, to provide the best possible care.

The recoveries mark a significant moment of relief for the state, which has been on high alert following recent cases of this life-threatening infection.
