Pathanamthitta: Rahul Mamkootathil, arrested in connection with a rape case, was on Monday remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the Pathanamthitta District Magistrate. Rahul will be lodged at the Mavelikkara Special Sub Jail after the court rejected his bail application.
Rahul Mamkootathil was produced before the magistrate after completing a medical examination at the Pathanamthitta General Hospital.
Tensions ran high outside the hospital as activists of the DYFI and Yuva Morcha staged strong protests against the MLA. Demonstrators surrounded the police jeep, raised slogans, and shouted at him, forcing police to struggle to escort him out of the vehicle. The situation escalated into brief scuffles between protesters and the police amid heavy security.
The MLA was arrested late at night, around 12.30 am, from a hotel in Palakkad in what police described as a dramatic operation. He was taken to the Pathanamthitta AR Camp in the early hours, where he was questioned by a special investigation team led by DIG G. Poonguzhali IPS.
The arrest follows a complaint filed via email by a woman from Pathanamthitta, accusing Rahul Mamkootathil of brutal sexual assault, forced abortion, financial exploitation, and other serious offences.
