Putin Lands in India Today: High-Stakes Talks on Oil, Trade, and Strategic Cooperation Amid U.S. Tariff Pressure

New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India today for a crucial two-day visit, marking his first trip to the country since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began. The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comes at a time when global powers are closely watching India’s strategic balancing act.

Putin will be formally received by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where a ceremonial welcome and state dinner await him. The centerpiece of his trip is his participation in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, during which he will hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Modi.

Government sources indicate that no new defense contracts will be signed during the visit. However, high-level discussions are expected on advanced military systems, including the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet and the S-400 air defense system, signaling potential future cooperation.

Trade—especially crude oil imports—is likely to dominate the discussions. India had scaled down Russian crude imports following U.S. warnings and a steep 50% tariff imposed on certain exports by the Trump administration, impacting India’s export sector. Now, New Delhi aims to expand its trade footprint in Russia by boosting exports of machinery parts, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food products.

Strategic Alignment and Energy Ties in Focus

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the Modi-Putin talks will cover regional and global security issues, making this summit a strategically consequential one. Notably, Russia has already approved a memorandum to enhance nuclear energy cooperation with India, signaling stronger long-term collaboration.

As both nations navigate a shifting global landscape marked by geopolitical tensions, sanctions, and realignments, Putin’s visit is poised to set the tone for the next phase of India-Russia strategic partnership.
