Probe Intensifies in Death of Dental Student in Kannur

Kannur: Police have intensified the investigation into the death of Nithin Raj, a dental college student from Ancharakandi, with officials indicating that financial stress linked to a loan app may have played a key role.

According to the Kannur City Police Commissioner, Nithin had taken a loan through a mobile app and had provided the phone number of a college teacher as a reference. The teacher reportedly received repeated calls from the loan app agents, following which she filed a complaint with the police.

Authorities are now examining whether Nithin had deliberately shared the teacher’s number or if it was accessed without consent by the loan app. Statements from fellow students are also being recorded as part of the investigation.

In connection with the case, police have registered a case against two faculty members, Dr. M.K. Ram and Dr. Sangeetha, charging them with abetment of suicide. Provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked.

Police have confirmed that the death was a case of suicide but stated that allegations of ragging will also be investigated. A special team is expected to travel to Thiruvananthapuram as part of the ongoing probe.
