Karnataka’s IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge has hit out at BJP leaders for misleading the public about the operations of the newly opened US Consulate in Bengaluru. Kharge clarified that while the consulate has opened, it will initially focus on providing assistance to American citizens and businesses. Visa processing services, he added, will commence at a later stage.
Kharge emphasized that the decision to establish consulates is based on a city’s economic significance, rather than political influence. He further pointed out that Bengaluru, with its booming trade and investment ecosystem, was a natural choice for the consulate’s location.
His comments followed BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s praise for Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, attributing the consulate’s establishment to their leadership. Surya also highlighted the consulate’s role in strengthening trade, business, and educational ties between the US and India.
The US Consulate in Bengaluru officially opened on January 17, 2025, marking a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations. However, visa services are not expected to begin immediately.
