New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the inclusion of Patna Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh and Chhari-Dhand Wetland in Gujarat as India’s newest Ramsar sites, highlighting the country’s continued commitment to the conservation of wetlands and biodiversity.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said the recognition reflects India’s growing focus on protecting ecologically sensitive ecosystems that play a crucial role in supporting wildlife, maintaining ecological balance, and sustaining local livelihoods. He congratulated conservationists, forest officials, and local communities who contributed to the protection of these wetlands.
Patna Bird Sanctuary, located in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, is an important habitat for resident and migratory birds and is known for hosting several rare and endangered species. Chhari-Dhand Wetland, situated near the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, is a seasonal saline wetland that supports a rich diversity of birdlife, particularly migratory species.
The Ramsar designation, granted under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, recognises wetlands of international importance and helps strengthen conservation efforts through global cooperation, sustainable management practices, and increased awareness.
With the addition of these two sites, India further strengthens its position as one of the leading countries in wetland conservation. The Prime Minister reiterated that protecting wetlands is essential for combating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and ensuring water security for future generations.
