President’s Rule Lifted in Manipur; BJP to Return to Power with Yumnam Khemchand Singh as Chief Minister

New Delhi: Ending nearly a year of central rule, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has officially withdrawn President’s Rule in Manipur, clearing the way for the formation of a new BJP-led government in the state.

Senior BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh is set to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur. His elevation was finalised at a BJP Legislature Party meeting held in Delhi, after which he met the Governor on Wednesday to formally stake his claim to form the government.

In a move aimed at ensuring broader representation, Nemcha Kipgen, a senior leader from the Kuki community and a former minister, will take charge as the Deputy Chief Minister.

A seasoned politician from the Meitei community, Yumnam Khemchand Singh previously served as Education and Panchayati Raj Minister in the Biren Singh cabinet. He has been elected from the Singjamei Assembly constituency in both 2017 and 2022, and has also held the post of Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The lifting of President’s Rule just weeks before the completion of one year marks a significant political development for Manipur, with expectations that the new government will focus on restoring stability, governance, and public confidence in the state.
