New Delhi: On the occasion of National Maritime Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to strengthening India’s maritime sector and port infrastructure. Highlighting the critical role of the maritime industry in the country’s economic growth and global trade, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize ports and enhance coastal connectivity.
Taking to social media, PM Modi saluted the unwavering dedication of India’s maritime workforce and acknowledged their contribution to the nation’s development. “India’s maritime sector is vital for our economic progress. We are working relentlessly to boost port-led development and improve logistics infrastructure across the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister also noted the success of initiatives under the Sagarmala Programme, aimed at port modernization, developing coastal communities, and improving cargo handling capacities. He reiterated that a strong maritime infrastructure is essential for realizing India’s vision of becoming a global logistics hub.
National Maritime Day, celebrated every year on April 5, commemorates the maiden voyage of the first Indian-owned ship, SS Loyalty, from Mumbai to London in 1919. The day honors the significance of the maritime sector in connecting India with the world and boosting trade.
As India continues to emerge as a major player in global maritime trade, the government’s focus on sustainable and innovative port development remains central to its vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive economy.
