New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, highlighting India’s commitment to democratic values and parliamentary traditions.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual learning among legislatures of Commonwealth nations. PM said strong, transparent, and inclusive parliamentary institutions are essential for safeguarding democracy and ensuring good governance in an increasingly complex global environment.
The conference brings together Speakers and Presiding Officers from Parliaments across the Commonwealth to deliberate on key issues such as strengthening democratic institutions, the role of legislatures in upholding constitutional values, use of technology in parliamentary functioning, and enhancing people-centric governance.
Prime Minister Modi also underscored India’s rich parliamentary heritage and the significance of Samvidhan Sadan as a symbol of the country’s democratic ethos. PM noted that forums like the Commonwealth conference provide an important platform to exchange best practices and collectively address challenges faced by democracies worldwide.
Senior parliamentary leaders, dignitaries, and representatives from several Commonwealth countries are participating in the multi-day conference, which aims to deepen parliamentary cooperation and reinforce the shared democratic ideals of the Commonwealth.
