PM Modi Unveils Bold Vision for India’s Steel Industry at India Steel 2025

In a powerful virtual address at the India Steel 2025 programme on April 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out an ambitious roadmap to transform India into a global steel powerhouse. He announced plans to scale up the country’s steel production capacity from 179 million tonnes to 300 million tonnes by 2030, with per capita consumption expected to rise from 98 kg to 160 kg under the National Steel Policy.

Highlighting a push for self-reliance, PM Modi urged the industry to target “zero imports and net exports,” envisioning a staggering 500 million tonnes of steel exports by 2047. Infrastructure was also front and center, as he showcased how the PM-Gati Shakti Master Plan is streamlining logistics and boosting connectivity between mines and steel plants—unlocking new growth and demand.

To secure raw materials, the Prime Minister called for aggressive exploration of greenfield mining sites and the adoption of coal gasification to cut import dependency. He also emphasized innovation, urging the industry to embrace AI, automation, and sustainable practices to lead in energy efficiency and low-emission production.

Positioning India as a reliable global supplier of high-quality steel, PM Modi encouraged the sector to uphold world-class standards and invest in continuous technological upgrades—cementing India’s place at the forefront of the global steel market.
