Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 200 new electric buses in Delhi, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to sustainable urban mobility and environmental protection.
The grand event in the national capital was attended by key dignitaries including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, and Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. This initiative is a major milestone in Delhi’s ambitious plan to transform its public transport system into a clean, electric-powered network.
Highlighting the importance of this step, PM Modi said the introduction of electric buses will significantly reduce pollution levels and improve the ‘Ease of Living’ for millions of Delhi residents, helping build a truly “clean and green Delhi.”
Earlier this year, Delhi rolled out 400 electric buses under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI), with plans to add another 401 buses by mid-June. The city aims to operate approximately 5,500 electric buses by the end of 2025, revolutionizing urban transport and lowering carbon emissions.
Alongside flagging off the buses, PM Modi also took part in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by planting a tree, emphasizing the role of individual responsibility in environmental conservation.
This move aligns perfectly with Delhi’s Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025, which will enforce the use of only BS-VI compliant, CNG, or electric commercial vehicles from November 1, 2025, marking a decisive shift towards greener urban living.
The launch of these electric buses marks a significant leap forward in Delhi’s fight against pollution and sets an inspiring example for sustainable urban development across India.
