The 5th Khelo India Winter Games have commenced in the breathtaking landscapes of Leh, Ladakh, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi sending heartfelt wishes to the athletes. In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed optimism that the Games would inspire young talent and embody the true spirit of sportsmanship.
The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in regions like Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir. He highlighted transformative initiatives, including the establishment of Khelo India Centres and a State Centre of Excellence in Leh, focusing on athletics, archery, and boxing, turning the region into a hub for sports excellence.
This year’s Winter Games, held in two phases—January 23-27 in Ladakh and February 22-25 in Jammu & Kashmir—bring together 19 teams from states, Union Territories, and institutions such as the Army and ITBP. With 594 participants, including 428 athletes, the event showcases thrilling ice and snow disciplines.
Since their launch in 2020, the Khelo India Winter Games have aimed to discover sporting talent and promote tourism. This fifth edition celebrates India’s cultural and geographical diversity while fostering a vibrant sports culture.
The opening ceremony at Leh’s NDS Stadium featured a grand march-past of teams on skates, cultural performances, and an exhibition ice hockey match. Though adverse weather delayed Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya’s arrival, he sent his best wishes and officially declared the Games open virtually.
