New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Manipur today for the first time since the ethnic clashes that erupted in May 2023, marking his return to the conflict-hit state after over two years. Modi’s visit comes with a strong development agenda and heightened security arrangements.
Landing around 12:30 p.m., Modi will first reach Churachandpur, a Kuki-majority district near Mizoram, where he will lay the foundation stone for projects worth ₹7,300 crore and announce a special economic package for both Meitei and Kuki communities. PM is expected to spend nearly five hours in the state.
By 2:30 p.m., the Prime Minister will be in Imphal, where modi will launch projects worth ₹1,200 crore and address a large public gathering. Modi will also interact with victims of the Manipur violence, underlining the humanitarian side of his visit.
Tensions flared in Churachandpur ahead of pm arrival, after flag arches and decorations put up for the event were vandalized on Thursday night, sparking clashes. Security forces have since been deployed in large numbers.
After Manipur, the Prime Minister will continue his multi-state development tour:
- Sept 13: Attend Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary celebrations in Guwahati.
- Sept 14: Launch and inaugurate projects worth ₹18,530 crore in Assam.
- Sept 15: Travel to Kolkata for the 16th Joint Commanders’ Conference, and later to Purnia, Bihar, where he will inaugurate the new airport terminal and unveil development projects worth ₹36,000 crore.
With this visit, Modi has placed development and reconciliation at the heart of his Manipur outreach, while also using the occasion to push forward an ambitious regional infrastructure plan.
