Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, in a prestigious ceremony on July 8 by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This rare distinction is reserved exclusively for heads of state and marks a historic moment in India–Brazil relations.
Calling the award a tribute to 1.4 billion Indians, PM Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Lula and the people of Brazil, stating that the recognition reflects the deep and enduring friendship between the two nations. He emphasized that this honour will inspire even closer cooperation in the years ahead.
The conferment took place during PM Modi’s state visit following the BRICS Summit and included grand ceremonial honours—among them, a 114-horse guard of honour and a unique harmonium-tabla welcome at Brazil’s Alvorada Palace.
This marks Modi’s 26th international award since assuming office in 2014, further underscoring his growing global recognition. The award also symbolises Brazil’s acknowledgment of Modi’s role in elevating India’s global presence and in strengthening strategic partnerships across the Global South.
