During a landmark visit to Nigeria, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the “Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger” (GCON) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This honor, Nigeria’s second-highest civilian award, celebrates PM Modi’s pivotal role in enhancing diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between the two nations.
The GCON distinction is a rarity among foreign leaders; Queen Elizabeth II was the only other non-Nigerian recipient, awarded in 1969. For PM Modi, this recognition adds to an illustrious tally of 17 international honors, showcasing his global leadership in fostering India’s international partnerships.
Expressing gratitude, PM Modi hailed the award as a symbol of the growing India-Nigeria friendship. His visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years, focused on bolstering cooperation in key sectors like energy, trade, defense, and cultural exchange. This historic moment highlights the strengthening strategic partnership between India and Africa’s largest economy.
