PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, Ushering in a New Era of Night Rail Travel

New Delhi: In a landmark moment for Indian Railways, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off the country’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, bringing high-speed, premium overnight rail travel to the tracks. The train connects Howrah, near Kolkata, with Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati, significantly strengthening links between eastern and northeastern India.

The historic service was flagged off from Malda Town in West Bengal. Designed as a modern overnight link between West Bengal and Assam, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to redefine long-distance rail journeys with enhanced speed, safety, and comfort.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the fully air-conditioned sleeper train has been developed to meet the growing travel needs of a modernising India. Offering a travel experience comparable to air travel at affordable fares, the new service promises a more comfortable and efficient option for long-distance passengers.

The Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to cut travel time by nearly 2.5 hours, marking a major step forward in India’s push towards faster and world-class railway infrastructure.
