Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a ₹1,010 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar, West Bengal, marking a major push toward clean and affordable energy access in the region.
The ambitious project will bring Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh homes and more than 100 commercial units across Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts. Additionally, 19 CNG stations are planned to support green mobility in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony, PM Modi underscored the project’s role in powering India’s transition to a developed nation, stressing the importance of Bengal’s participation. “This initiative will bring clean, safe, and affordable energy right to people’s kitchens,” he said.
Modi also highlighted the exponential growth of India’s city gas network — from 66 districts in 2014 to over 550 today — now extending to small towns and villages, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to clean energy expansion.
The CGD project is expected to boost local employment, reduce carbon emissions, and lessen dependency on traditional fuels — aligning with the government’s broader sustainable energy vision.
Dignitaries including Union Minister Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari, and Alipurduar MP Manoj Tigga were present at the event.
