New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled an ambitious blueprint for India’s maritime renaissance, presenting the ocean-bound economy as a central pillar of the nation’s future growth. Addressing a global audience, Modi extended a powerful invitation to international investors to be part of India’s transformation into a world-class maritime hub.
“When the global seas are rough, the world looks for a steady lighthouse — India is poised to play that role, with strength and stability,” the Prime Minister declared, outlining his vision for a robust and self-reliant maritime sector.
Modi announced that major port capacity has doubled, inland waterways cargo traffic has surged by 700%, and the number of operational waterways has grown from three to thirty-two — a testament to India’s rapid maritime progress. He highlighted that new shipping and coastal-shipping laws, along with modern governance structures, are being implemented to make India a globally competitive maritime hub.
Under the “Maritime India Vision 2030” and “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047”, the government envisions a massive ₹80 lakh crore (US$10 trillion) investment pipeline across ports, logistics, and shipping infrastructure. Modi emphasised the “Make in India, Make for the World” approach, urging global companies to take advantage of India’s 100% FDI policy in ports and shipping, and to collaborate in expanding the nation’s blue economy.
With over 90% of India’s trade flowing through sea routes, the maritime sector remains the lifeline of India’s economy. The Prime Minister noted that upgrading ports, developing shipyards, promoting ship-leasing, and strengthening Inland Water Transport (IWT) will drastically cut logistics costs and boost connectivity — key to achieving India’s export ambitions.
By positioning itself as a maritime hub for the Indo-Pacific, India not only seeks economic growth but also aims to strengthen its strategic presence in the global maritime arena.
International investors, shipping firms, and technology companies have been invited to anchor large-scale projects across shipbuilding, port connectivity, and marine logistics. The government anticipates major MoUs and investment commitments at upcoming global forums, including India Maritime Week 2025, which will serve as a key platform for international collaboration.
Modi’s announcement marks a historic moment for India’s maritime journey — combining vision, infrastructure, and international partnership. The initiative promises to steer India towards becoming a maritime superpower, redefining its role in global trade and oceanic innovation.
