New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level strategy meeting to review and accelerate the development of India’s fisheries sector, with a strong focus on deep-sea fishing, technological innovation, and boosting seafood exports. The meeting aimed to position India as a global seafood powerhouse while ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth for fishing communities.
During the meeting, PM Modi emphasized the modernization of the sector through cutting-edge technology. He proposed the use of satellite-based resource tracking, drones for rapid catch transport, and the creation of smart harbours and markets to streamline logistics and improve value addition.
A major highlight was the discussion on the multi-sectoral potential of seaweed—from biofuel and nutrition to pharmaceuticals. The Prime Minister called for inter-ministerial collaboration to unlock this untapped marine resource.
Other key proposals included promoting ornamental fisheries for alternative livelihoods, integrating fisheries with Amrit Sarovars (revived water bodies), and comprehensive capacity-building programs for traditional fishermen to adopt modern practices.
To remove bottlenecks, PM Modi advocated for a “negative list” approach, identifying policies or barriers that impede growth, and enhancing Ease of Doing Business in the fisheries sector.
This review follows the recent launch of ₹255 crore worth of fisheries infrastructure under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to the Blue Economy.
India, the world’s second-largest fish producer, contributes nearly 8% of global fish output. The sector is a vital economic driver, especially for rural and coastal populations.
The meeting was attended by Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Fisheries Secretary Abhilaksh Likhi, and senior officials from relevant ministries and the PMO.
