New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally ensured his own inclusion in the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which mandates automatic removal of jailed ministers. The bill, introduced on August 20, stipulates that any Prime Minister, Union Minister, or Chief Minister detained for 30 consecutive days on serious charges will be removed from office on the 31st day unless granted bail or resigned.
Calling it a landmark in accountability, Shah contrasted Modi’s move with Indira Gandhi’s 39th Amendment, which had shielded top offices from legal scrutiny. “Modi has brought a constitutional amendment against himself—if the Prime Minister goes to jail, he will have to resign,” Shah said. He asserted that governance cannot be run from jail, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated there would be “no exception” even for the PM.
