New Delhi: OpenAI, the global AI leader and creator of ChatGPT, has announced plans to open its first-ever office in India by the end of 2025. The upcoming office in New Delhi marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.

Recognizing India as one of the fastest-growing AI markets, OpenAI said the move will strengthen its presence and enhance services for millions of users in the country.

“Opening our first office and building a local team in India is a crucial step in our commitment to making AI more accessible nationwide. Our goal is to develop AI for India and with India. I look forward to visiting India in September. At present, our focus is on bringing OpenAI’s products to the country,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

The Indian office will also contribute to the India AI Mission, providing structured support for students, educators, developers, and professionals already using OpenAI’s tools. The company confirmed it has officially registered its Indian entity and has begun recruitment for key roles.

India, OpenAI revealed, is now its second-largest market after the U.S., underscoring the nation’s role as a hub for innovation and digital adoption. The Government of India has welcomed the company’s decision, calling it a step toward strengthening the country’s AI ecosystem.
