No Cause for Alarm Over Flu Outbreak in China: Kerala Health Minister Veena George Assures Public

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George has addressed public concerns surrounding reports of a flu outbreak in China, specifically linked to the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). She reassured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm in Kerala, while advising vulnerable groups to remain cautious.

In a social media statement, Minister George clarified that while flu and pneumonia cases have increased in China, no new virus posing a pandemic-level threat has been identified. She remarked, “Even though there are no reports of any scare from China, increased incidences of flu and pneumonia are there.”

The Minister urged elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions to take preventive measures, including wearing masks, especially while traveling. “Since Keralites are globally present and traveling, it would be best if pregnant, aged, and sick people use masks,” she advised.

Highlighting Kerala’s preparedness, she assured that the state’s advanced laboratories are fully equipped to test for HMPV if needed. She also encouraged international travelers with respiratory symptoms to remain vigilant and seek medical assistance if required.

This assurance aligns with the statements from India’s Director General of Health Services, Dr. Atul Goel, who noted that respiratory illnesses are common during winter, and healthcare facilities are prepared to handle such cases efficiently.

Meanwhile, China has downplayed concerns, describing the HMPV surge as a seasonal occurrence that is less severe and spreading on a smaller scale compared to previous years.

With robust monitoring and preparedness in place, health authorities continue to urge standard precautions while assuring the public that there is no immediate threat to Kerala or India.
