New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s medical education sector, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 10,650 new MBBS seats and the establishment of 41 new medical colleges across the country for the 2024–25 academic year.
With this expansion, the total number of MBBS seats will rise to 1,37,600, including those available in Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS and JIPMER.
The move aims to address the shortage of medical professionals in India, especially in rural and underserved regions. Several of the new colleges will be attached to existing district hospitals, ensuring improved healthcare access while also serving as training grounds for future doctors.
Health Ministry officials said the approvals reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen medical infrastructure and expand opportunities for medical education.
“This expansion will not only meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals but also ensure that quality medical education becomes more accessible across states,” an NMC official stated.
The decision marks a significant step toward India’s goal of achieving one doctor per 1,000 citizens, aligning with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, and further reinforces India’s position as a global leader in medical education and healthcare capacity-building.
