Nepal in Turmoil: Gen-Z Uprising Claims 22 Lives, Army Steps In After Leaders Quit

Kathmandu: Nepal has been rocked by a massive Gen-Z-led uprising, leaving 22 dead and thousands injured in violent clashes across the country. The unrest spiraled after protesters stormed prisons, enabling nearly 900 inmates to escape. With both the Prime Minister and President stepping down, the Army has taken over national security.

Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel appealed to the youth to restore calm and embrace dialogue, while warning that looting and arson under the guise of protest would invite “strict action.”

The military has also assumed control of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, forcing airlines including Air India and SpiceJet to cancel services.

Despite the crackdown, protests continue to rage nationwide, with clashes between demonstrators and security forces intensifying. Several countries have urged calm and advised their citizens to avoid travel to Nepal.

Meanwhile, talks on an interim government are underway, with protesters rallying behind Kathmandu’s 35-year-old Mayor, Balen Shah, as their choice for the next Prime Minister.
