Nedumbassery Airport Railway Station Set to Take Off Soon; MEMU Trains to Get More Coaches from November

Kochi: A major boost for Kerala’s transport infrastructure is on the horizon as the long-awaited Nedumbassery Airport Railway Station project is finally set to begin construction soon. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a recent meeting with Union Minister George Kurian, confirmed that preparatory steps for the much-anticipated project are underway.

The new station — planned to provide direct rail connectivity to Cochin International Airport (CIAL) — has been a decades-long dream for air travellers. During a window-trailing inspection last year, Minister Vaishnaw had personally reviewed and approved the proposed site, accompanied by George Kurian and top railway officials.

In another major announcement, Vaishnaw revealed that MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains will soon get additional coaches starting this November, easing congestion and improving passenger comfort for daily commuters.

The Railway Minister also assured that the Ministry would consider additional halts for select trains to better serve passengers across Kerala.

Minister George Kurian added that two popular trains — the Thiruvananthapuram North–SMVT Bengaluru Humsafar Express (16319/16320) and the Nilambur–Thiruvananthapuram North Rajyarani Express (16350) — will now stop at Kayamkulam and Karunagappally stations, respectively.

These decisions mark a significant step forward in Kerala’s railway connectivity, promising greater convenience for both air travellers and daily commuters.
